The Innovative Life of Garrett A. Morgan
Who Was Garrett A. Morgan?
With only an elementary school education, Garrett Morgan began his career as a sewing-machine mechanic. He went on to patent several inventions, including an improved sewing machine, traffic signal, a hair-straightening product, and a respiratory device that would later provide the blueprint for WWI gas masks.
Outside of his inventing career, Morgan diligently supported the African American community throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the newly formed National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was active in the Cleveland Association of Colored Men, donated to Negro colleges and opened an all-Black country club. Additionally, in 1920, he launched the African American newspaper the Cleveland Call(later named the Call and Post).
The inventor and social activist died on July 27, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio.
We will be joined by 2 classes of students from Garrett Morgan High School!
Youth Service Committee will hold High School Recognition Day facilitator trainings before the meeting at 11:15 a.m. and after 1:00 p.m on both February 1st and 8th. Please attend if you are planning on facilitating this year or want to know more about the day!

American Red Cross Blood Donor Day, February 22, 2024
The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage
The nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. Blood and platelet donations are needed now to help alleviate the shortage and ensure lifesaving medical procedures are not delayed.
Over the last 20 years, the number of people donating blood to the Red Cross has fallen by more than 40%.
Additional challenges lie ahead as winter weather and seasonal illnesses like the flu and COVID-19 may compound the dire blood supply situation the nation currently faces.
Blood products are currently going to hospitals faster than blood donations are coming in. In recent weeks, the Red Cross has had to limit distributions of some of the most transfused blood types to hospitals.
Make an appointment to give blood or platelets now by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visitingRedCrossBlood.orgor calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Karpinski Engineering (3135 Euclid Ave, CLE 44115) will be holding a blood drive Wednesday February 28th from 9:00 - 3:00 p.m., if this time and place works better, all are welcome!
